16Personalities – The NERIS Model

The 16Personalities test (NERIS® model) is one of the most popular free personality tools online. It looks similar to MBTI®, but it adds a fifth dimension called Identity (Assertive vs. Turbulent). This helps explain how confidently you approach decisions and how you respond to stress.

In this lesson, you will:

  1. Learn how 16Personalities works.
  2. Take the free online test.
  3. Reflect on what your result says about how you live and interact.

What 16Personalities Reveals

The 5 Aspects:

  1. Mind (Extraverted – Introverted) → how you interact with the world.
  2. Energy (Intuitive – Observant) → how you see the world and process information.
  3. Nature (Thinking – Feeling) → how you make decisions.
  4. Tactics (Judging – Prospecting) → how you approach planning and work.
  5. Identity (Assertive – Turbulent) → how confident you are in your abilities and decisions.

👉 These combine into a 5-letter type (e.g., ENFP-T, ISTJ-A).

Making Meaning

Activity: Write your type and reflect:

  • 2 things from the description that feel accurate.
  • 1 thing that surprises you or you’re not sure about.

👉 Example: “I’m an INTP-A. The part about loving analysis fits me perfectly. I also relate to being independent. The part about not liking teamwork didn’t quite fit—I enjoy collaborations.”

Journaling & Integration

Prompts:

  1. How does my “Identity” letter (A or T) show up in my life?
  2. What do I do when I feel confident (A)? What about when I feel uncertain (T)?
  3. How does this 5-letter model compare with my MBTI 4-letter type?
